Our story: Melbourne's OG climbing gym, since 1993
Cliffhanger opened its doors in 1993, making it Melbourne’s OG climbing gym and one of the first climbing gyms in Australia. For more than 30 years it has been passed down through generations of climbers, many of whom learned to tie in, belay and lead right here on our walls.
What sets Cliffhanger apart is height. Our tallest wall stands 19 metres high, the tallest indoor climbing wall in Australia. It’s a genuine rope climbing gym: 30 top rope walls and 24 lead lines, with more than 100 routes from grade 6 to 29+. New climbs are set every week, so there’s always something fresh to try.
In 2022 Cliffhanger was reborn. We upgraded the walls, improved the lead climbing facilities and expanded the hold selection, bringing Australia’s tallest climbing gym up to date with state-of-the-art facilities. Alongside the ropes you’ll find a training area with a Moon Board, spray wall and circuit wall, plus a lounge and coffee at reception.
Today Cliffhanger welcomes first-time climbers, kids and families, experienced lead climbers, our youth program, schools, Scouts and Guides, birthday parties and corporate groups. You’ll find us at the Westgate Sports Centre, 61-65 Dohertys Road, Altona North, in Melbourne’s west.
